Caterham F1 Team began life in September 2009 when Tony Fernandes and his fellow shareholders Kamarudin Meranun and SM Nasarudin, along with Chief Technical Officer Mike Gascoyne, were given the news that their application to enter the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship had been accepted. They immediately set about making preparations for the forthcoming season, which meant designing and building not only a race car but a whole Formula One team. Just five months later drivers Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli joined the team’s senior management for the launch of the T127 in its iconic green and yellow livery at a glittering ceremony in London.
One month later, Lotus Racing – the name the team competed under in 2010 – took to the track for the first practice session of the season opening Bahrain Grand Prix with the whole team drawing plaudits from around the world for the astonishing accomplishment of creating a Formula One team from nothing in just six months. Over the following 10 months the team consistently led the ‘battle of the new teams’, finally achieving their 2010 goal of finishing tenth in the championship at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. In 2011, this time under the Team Lotus name, the team moved away from their new team rivals and closer to the established midfield teams, fighting for race finishes with many famous F1 names and again ending the season in tenth place, securing their position in the F1 fraternity for many years to come.
For 2012 Caterham F1 Team will be aiming to move another step towards the midfield pack and will be winning the hearts and minds of F1 fans around the world as they bring their new, fresh approach to the FIA Formula One World Championship.
